  • Celebrate the songbirds that reside in or pass through Northern Idaho each year. In this class kids will learn to identify some of the small birds in their area and then learn basic wood carving technique to create sculptures of the birds that they observe.

We will begin with a walk through the forest to observe some of the songbirds that are present at the Pine Street Sled Hill. Afterward, we will come together to discuss the birds and bird behavior that we witnessed and consult field guides to identify these birds. Students will then choose a specific bird to carve from a pre-cut wooden form. The carved birds will be mounted on a wooden base and then painted to match the color patterns of the particular bird. During the four class sessions, students will have time to carve more than one bird.

No prior woodcarving or birding experience is necessary. All tools and materials will be provided. Please dress for the weather as we will sometimes be outdoors for part of the class.
