Background: Kaniksu Land Trust (KLT) is a regional community-based nonprofit organization founded in 2002. KLT’s mission is to care for the lands and people of the Kaniksu Region, today, tomorrow, and forever. KLT works with private landowners, community and government leaders, and various conservation and community partners to support conservation, connection and community. The goal of KLT’s work is to bring lasting and far-reaching impacts that benefit our community and the natural world around us. Today, KLT protects over 4,000 acres of sensitive habitat, working lands, and public access properties, which support the overall health of the land and people in the Kaniksu Region. KLT has been awarded National Accreditation by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission.
Job Description: The Conservation and Education Internships support the missional work of KLT. During summer months, KLT hosts Camp Kaniksu and Trails & Tales, which are highly-attended programs that engage children with the land to experience the natural world. KLT also hosts a variety of fundraising and community events that are central to building support for land conservation efforts. As well, there are a myriad of conservation opportunities including work on our public access properties and visits to support monitoring efforts on private conservation lands. We will strive to engage you with a variety of tasks and opportunities to strengthen your knowledge and understanding of non-profit land trusts.
The Conservation and Education Interns’ responsibilities include assisting with outreach through KLT programs and summer events; assisting in marketing to promote Trails & Tales and other summer programs and events; helping to plan and design outreach and education initiatives; assisting in the ongoing maintenance of Pine Street Woods; and additional office support.
The Conservation and Education Intern Position is an hourly, seasonal, paid position that reports to various staff members at KLT. Past interns are encouraged to reapply. Total employment may not exceed two (2) seasons.
PERSONAL QUALITIES
The successful applicant should be self motivated, flexible and adaptable, with a positive team-oriented attitude. S/he must be comfortable working independently and also closely with every member of our staff as necessary. A spirit of curiosity, learning, open-mindedness and a sense of humor and adventure are all essential qualities.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT/ OUTDOOR EDUCATION (30%)
● Host a series of educational opportunities for youth and adults that focuses on appropriate age-level educational experiences at our public access properties.
● Support a variety of events over the summer that will engage our community.
● Support the delivery of Camp Kaniksu, a youth outdoor education summer camp experience, as needed by the Director of Education.
CONSERVATION (60%)
● Collaborate with the land manager on various land management tasks to enhance ecosystem health and improve public access and safety on our properties.
● Collaborate with the Conservation Director in conservation projects on our public access properties.
OTHER (10%)
● Assist with administrative and office responsibilities as needed.

● Commitment to KLT vision and desire to further programs in support of this vision.
● Commitment to outdoor education as a means of nurturing physical/emotional/mental development.
● Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse ages/socioeconomic groups.
● Ability to plan meaningful experiences that complement or enhance existing curricular plans and to manage complex logistics.
● Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle (mileage reimbursed at federal rate).
ADDITIONAL DETAILS:
Status: Hourly, Part-time approx. 25 hours per week
Compensation: $15/hour
