Learn basic wood carving techniques by carving the Scandinavian toy horse that has become the informal national symbol of Sweden. Known today as a “Dala” horse, the name is short for Dalarna, the province in central Sweden where these carved horses were made for nearly two centuries. The Dala horse is a great practice piece for the aspiring wood carver and also makes a great gift or holiday decoration. Students will be given a rough-cut horse figure to shape and smooth with a carving knife. Knives and a cut-resistant safety glove will be provided. No previous carving experience required.
